According to the story, there was a tribal man named Karinthandan who served as a guide to a British officer during the colonial period. After helping the British officer discover a safe route through the treacherous forests of Wayanad, Karinthandan was allegedly killed by the officer in order to claim the credit for the discovery himself.
As the legend goes, Karinthandan’s spirit haunted the area, causing trouble for travelers. To pacify his spirit, a priest is said to have tied a metal chain around a large tree, which came to be known as the Chain Tree.
The Chain Tree has become a symbolic representation of the legend and attracts visitors who are interested in folklore and local history. It is located on the side of the road between Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery, and many tourists stop by to see the tree, take pictures, and learn about the legend associated with it.
